North Carolina State Parks reservations for the popular waterfront and electric sites go fast for summer weekends and holidays — Memorial Day and the Fourth of July are usually gone weeks out. Not all the sites at Falls Lake are created equal when you’re towing a 30-foot rig. Rolling View, off NC-98 near Bahama, has some of the easier pull-through and back-in sites with electric and water, and the road in handles a delivery trailer without any white-knuckle moments. Holly Point over near Wake Forest is gorgeous and close to the water, but a few of the lakeside back-in spots are tight and tree-lined — when someone books one of those, I match them with a slightly shorter travel trailer so the setup goes smooth instead of becoming a 45-minute shuffle.

A weather note from someone who’s out here a lot: Falls Lake summers are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms that pop up fast in July and August — the camper’s A/C earns its keep. Spring and fall are the sweet spot. April through early June and again from mid-September into October give you comfortable nights and far fewer bugs. If you can swing a fall trip, do it.
